Arguably, the category for "Best Metal Performance" gets overlooked sometimes. Much hype was made about it when the category debuted at the 31st Grammy Awards in 1989. It's really one of the few categories that does bring excitement to the awards show that has been mostly been dominated by the pop stars that are constantly seen everywhere.
There's was definitely some excitement surrounding the first Grammy given out for the category. Metallica were the frontrunners to win for ...And Justice for All, which was obvious because how could you not give it to Metallica? Yet, somehow Jethro Tull walked out that night with the first ever Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" that made a legion of Metallica fans angry.
Anyway it's been a long time since then and metal has gone through a lot of changes, and this category does present the best of what metal has to offer. This year's category includes some of the gods of metal, and those finally solidifying their name in the metal world.
