Stories and articles abound on the Internet and in magazines about ‘the one that got away’. In everyday situations, it’s usually referring to fisherman’s tales. But in Hollywood it has a very different meaning.
For many actors, it’s one of the worst-case scenarios – the turning down of a role that then goes on to win accolades and awards for the person who accepted the offer. Or, possibly worse, jettisons their career into the stratosphere whilst being left to languish in daytime soaps.
Ask Tom Selleck. He had to drop out of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford stepped in and, whilst he defined the role of Indiana Jones over its four installments and $1.5 billion box-office income, spare a thought for Selleck. At least he had the continued success of Magnum P.I. television series to fall back on.
